Sheriff Marc Poulin serves as the Sheriff of Washington County, bringing with him over two decades of law enforcement experience and a deep commitment to public safety and community service. An Eagle Scout, Army veteran, and lifelong resident of Vermont, Sheriff Poulin has dedicated his career to fostering safer communities, building trust between law enforcement and citizens, and ensuring that his department upholds the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
Sheriff Poulin began his law enforcement career with the Montpelier Police Department, serving as a Patrolman for just over 2 years before leaving for the Sheriff's Office as a State Transport Deputy. Sheriff Poulin worked his way through the ranks with a focus on collaborative problem-solving, crime prevention, and effective leadership. He has served in various capacities, including investigative roles, administrative leadership, and community outreach programs, allowing him to understand the diverse challenges facing both urban and rural communities. Sheriff Poulin is currently a VT Criminal Justice Council certified Use of Force, PR-24, and OC Instructor, Field Training Officer, Traffic Control Technician, EMT, and Below 100 Instructor. Sheriff Poulin is a graduate of the National Sheriff's Institute Leadership and Communicating for Impact courses, and has been selected to attend the prestigious FBI National Academy Class 298.
As Sheriff, Marc Poulin emphasizes transparency, accountability, and public engagement. He is dedicated to improving training standards for deputies, expanding community policing efforts, and strengthening partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies. Under his leadership, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office has focused on proactive measures to address public safety issues such as substance abuse, traffic safety, and mental health crises.
Beyond his duties as Sheriff, Marc Poulin is actively involved in numerous civic and community organizations including the Scouting America- Green Mountain Council, the Masonic community, and is a Past-President of the Piano Technicians Guild, a worldwide trade organization of piano service professionals. He is a strong advocate for youth programs, veteran support initiatives, and efforts to enhance the overall quality of life in Washington County. His vision is to create a department that is not only a trusted partner in public safety but also a pillar of support for all members of the community.
Sheriff Poulin has received several commendations for his service. He is committed to leading by example, ensuring that the Washington County Sheriff’s Office remains a respected and reliable resource for the citizens it serves.
